Local teen survives swine flu scare
Christi Myers

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- We have one teenager's story of surviving the swine flu. Doctors called Billy Cary, 13, the sickest child in Texas Children's Hospital. Billy spent almost two months there with swine flu that went into complications that nearly killed him, but he pulled through and went home just before Thanksgiving.

"I was put in a drug induced coma for two to three weeks," said Billy.

He spent 54 days in the hospital with swine flu, three weeks in the Intensive Care Unit.

"I was very close to death, my lungs were gone and I was put on multiple ventilators and it was scary," said Billy.

The junior high student had gone to the doctor on a Monday and tested negative for swine flu. On Friday he went back to the doctor, then immediately into the Emergency Room.

"It went from a cold with flu to being intubated in the ICU in four hours," said Billy's father, Bill Cary.

Billy's mother, Kim, added, "They were working on him in the ambulance. I was in the ambulance with him and when we arrived at TCH, they were very quick in intubating him and helping him breathe."

Billy said, "It was like something was caught in my throat and I couldn't get it up. I was coughing and it was like a wheezing feeling."

He's a tennis player who could withstand Houston heat. Now he can only stand long enough to shower. He's doing physical therapy to rebuild his strength.

"He's five foot eight inches and weighed 100 pounds going in. Now he's down to 80 pounds," said Kim.

Dr. Julie Boom said, "For many children, the disease is very mild, but it can be severe and there's no way to predict."

Doctors say as the H1N1 vaccine finally becomes more available, parents need to vaccinate their children.

"We're in the sixth or seventh week of the decline of the H1N1 virus in Texas, but we don't know if that will level out or pick up again," said Dr. Boom.

Billy has lung damage, kidney damage and circulation problems, but he feels lucky.

"I was grateful to be living," he said.

Billy was the only one in his family to get sick. Experts say about a third of the children who have died had no underlying problems.

Apple Springs ISD disinfecting district after flu outbreak

http://www.ktre.com/Global/story.asp?S=11645324

APPLE SPRINGS, TX (KTRE) – Tuesday Apple Springs Independent School District is working to get their campus sanitized. The district closed for the week because of a flu outbreak. On Friday, about 38 of the district's 196 students were not in school because of an illness.

Superintendent Gregg Spivey said some parents of the absent kids called in confirming that their children did have H1N1 or the seasonal flu. Spivey said they decided to let school out because there were so many kids absent that would get behind.

"The primary reason we canceled school was because of the safety of our kids," said Spivey. "That's always the utmost important to us and we have not had any reports of kids being held at the hospital or anything like that."

While the Sheldon ISD campuses are reporting a decline in the number of children being sent home with flu-like symptoms, school nurses report that there are still some cases of the flu, both seasonal and recently confirmed cases of H1N1. Please see the letter to parents ("Continued hygiene will help stem flu bug") in the news stories and press release section.

Flu outbreak keeping large number of Eustace ISD students home

EUSTACE, TX (KLTV) - The Eustace Independent School District is contending with a large number of absentees due to a sickness that is going around the student population.

According to Superintendent, Coy Holcombe, a couple of viruses are going around the student population, one with stomach virus symptoms and another one with flu like symptoms.

Last week more than 200 students were home sick, which is a very high proportion of the district's 1460 students, which is close to 14 percent.

Thursday, 157 students were out sick, which is the best day so far for the district since the outbreak.

6-year-old Dallas girl found dead after being sent home from hospital with flu diagnosis

A 6-year-old girl who had been diagnosed with the flu was found dead this morning at her home in Pleasant Grove.

Tahila Johnson complained Monday morning of aches and pains “all over her body,” according to a police report.

She was taken to Dallas Regional Medical Center in Mesquite that night and discharged about 10 p.m. with Zyrtec and a flu diagnosis, the report says.

WFAA-TV (Channel 8) reports that while the family was told Tahila had the flu, she was never specifically tested for the virus.

That night, Tahila’s grandmother checked on her around 2 a.m. and heard the girl snoring in bed at their home on Hollow Ridge Road. In the morning, she found the girl “stiff and cold to the touch,” the report says.

Paramedics declared the child dead at 7:22 a.m.

The Dallas County medical examiner’s office has yet to confirm the child’s cause of death. An autopsy won’t be performed until Wednesday.

Our Scott Farwell and Marc Ramirez reported in this morning’s paper that this flu season could be one of the worst in North Texas since the H1N1 epidemic hit three years ago.

JUSTIN (CBSDFW.COM) – Northwest ISD students have returned to class following the winter break, and school officials fear they have brought their germs with them. But the district is doing everything they can to stop influenza in its tracks.

“Our nurses have been going into classrooms since November talking to students about proper hand washing and the proper way to sneeze,” said the district’s Leslie Weaver.

Each classroom is also equipped with antibacterial gel to encourage students to keep their hands clean. Some middle school students even got in on the action, creating and sharing a video about how to stop the spread of germs.

“The video was kind of a comical, but educational way to share with their classmates good hand washing tips and a proper way to sneeze,” said Weaver. “And that video has been shown to students throughout Northwest ISD.”

Doctors around North Texas have reported an uptick in the number of flu cases seen this season, in addition to a stomach bug that has swept through the metroplex. Dr. Janica Rose-Stine with Cook Children’s says the flu epidemic has started four to six weeks earlier than usual.

The increased awareness surrounding the problem has led to a sudden surge in demand for the flu vaccine, making it difficult to find at some area pharmacies.

Possible Dallas County Flu Death As Cases Rise

By BJ Austin

Dallas County Health officials say they cannot confirm a flu death. Health Department director Zach Thompson says the Medical Examiner must determine cause of death, and that may take time. He says until then, the girl’s death cannot be attributed to flu.

A family in Pleasant Grove tells WFAA a six year old girl, diagnosed with the flu, died after being checked out at a local hospital and sent home with a prescription.

Thompson says he is concerned that students returning to class after the Christmas break may boost the flu’s momentum. He says they’ve been tracking student absenteeism and anecdotal reports of coughing and sneezing in the classroom.

“Schools got ready to take their break, we saw an uptick in absenteeism in some of the schools. We saw it across the board," Thompson reported to Dallas County Commissioners. "But, one of the things we found is that parents are sending their kids to school sick. We’re encouraging parents to make sure if their children are sick to keep them at home.”

Thompson says more than 200 people lined up for flu shots Monday at the county’s main clinic on Stemmons Expressway. He says a shipment of one thousand additional doses is expected Tuesday or Wednesday.

Tarrant County Health officials say their supply of vaccine is dwindling. They probably have enough to last the week.

Flu has hospitalized more than 250 people in Dallas County, and widespread flu activity is reported in most North Texas counties.

School may be back in session, but some students have gotten out of it for just a little longer, but it's not for any kind of vacation.

Just as Clack Middle School nurse Karen Rayburn who knows exactly what they should be doing.

"If you have been throwing up, or diarrhea or have fever, you are to stay home twenty four hours after the last episode of any of the above," said Rayburn.

School attendance in Abilene and other parts of the Big Country has been down about five percent since Christmas vacation.

Rayburn imagines that number will go up pretty soon.

"Everybody's been out and about and then everybody gets closed in with heating systems on and we see an increase in communicable diseases at that time," she said.

This years' flu season has more than quadrupled in confirmed cases since last year in Abilene alone and while school attendence is going a bit down.

It's going way up in local pharmacies where people are stocking up on medicine and flu vaccines.

"That's a good thing people are actually aware of it and actually acting, but even a shot wont completely prevent you from catching the virus," said James McCoy of James McCoy's Drugstore.

"It takes ten to 14 days for the flu shot to take into effect so if you've come in contact or have been exposed to the flu there's a good chance that you can get the flu anyway," said McCoy

So Rayburn is prepared making sure her campus is stocked up on antibacterial and posters with a few tips on prevention.

She agrees its one of the few times in the year where she doesn't mind seeing the halls a bit emptier than usual.
