Flu-LThere are no confirmed cases of Swine Flu at J.F.K. High in the Cheektowaga-Sloan School District. But on Tuesday, about one fifth of the student body was home sick; including 27 students who were sent home after they got to school.

"It's basically flu-like symptoms we're seeing," said Jacquelyn Astyk, the school nurse at J.F.K. "Our upsurge followed our homecoming week where a lot of students were together for activities and also with events in the community for Halloween, the haunted houses and that. Students are being together and we're seeing an increase in the flu symptoms

In the Iroquois Central School District, about 18-percent of its student body was out sick Tuesday.

NEW YORK; Troy campus

As of October 8, we have experienced 21 cases of influenza among our students on the Troy campus. Currently, we have our largest number of sick students at one time, with 14 students with active cases of the illness. Seven are in isolation rooms and seven are recuperating at home with their families. In addition, there have been reports of several faculty and staff with influenza-like illness.

Here is a handy link to keep track of the absenteeism trends in New York City schools. Top of page has a graph that gives the overall absenteeism rate by day since school resumed, and below the graph each individual school's absenteeism rate is given. There are some schools with 30-40% absenteeism.

Shen confirms a case of swine flu

Published: Monday, October 12, 2009

CLIFTON PARK — Shenendehowa Central School District has confirmed one case of H1N1 flu at High School East.

According to a notice on the district’s Web site, school officials are reinforcing “flu etiquette” and what families, students and school personnel do to keep from getting sick and spreading flu.

Students and staff members are advised to wash their hands often, especially after coughing or sneezing. Hand sanitizers will be provided by the district and located throughout all of the schools.

Students and staff are urged to stay home if they are sick. Influenza-like illness is defined as a fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit and a cough or sore throat. Some people also experience a runny nose, congestion, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, fatigue and muscle aches.

The district is also advising families to get vaccinated for both seasonal flu and the H1N1 virus.

Attendance at Beaver River Central School District improved dramatically this week after the flu outbreak last week. But Tuesday's absentee count of 74 students still was more than on a normal day.

Absenteeism in the district peaked Oct. 6 at 335 students, or 35 percent.

This week, district staff members are monitoring students who are coming back after being sick to make sure they are not contagious, Superintendent Leueen Smithling said.

If teachers see a student exhibiting flu-like symptoms, they have been told to send the student to the nurses' office to be evaluated, Mrs. Smithling said.

SUNY releases plan for potential swine flu outbreak

“Our first priority is to help keep students, faculty and staff healthy and safe,” Zimpher said in a statement today. “When there is illness, SUNY’s advanced planning and preparation aims to minimize it.”

The number of cases of influenza-like illness being reported by SUNY’s 64 campuses each day is minimal, school officials said. The average daily number is 83, less than .02 percent of the nearly 440,000 students on SUNY’s 64 campuses. There have been no SUNY-related deaths from flu-like illnesses or H1N1.
