Two schools were closed in Hungary on Wednesday due to an outbreak of the new flu. To date, three schools have been closed in the country due to the virus.
The first school to close was the Mor Perczel vocational school of Mor in Fejer county, W Hungary. Later in the day, another school in Labatlan (N) was closed after 143 pupils reported ill. The primary school is expected to stay closed until November 23, the notary of the town told MTI. Samples from five pupils have tested positive for the H1N1 virus, Katalin Sari, the head of the local public health authority, said.
The health minister announced that secondary school students would be given the new flu vaccine free of charge from Wednesday on. Tamas Szekely added that despite the school closures the number of new flu patients in the country was still low to declare an epidemic.
The small opposition Democratic Forum (MDF) has called on the government to introduce strict health measures at crossing points on the Hungarian-Ukrainian border due to the rapid spread of flu in Ukraine. MDF MP Miklos Csapody also urged that mobile pharmacies should be set up in the vicinity of border crossings to serve people - including ethnic Hungarians - living on the other side of the border.
