TUCSON, AZ (KOLD) - A female student at the University of Arizona has contracted and fully recovered from the strain of flu virus popularly known as swine flu.

She required no hospitalization.

According to officials at the UA, all 25 total flu cases reported so far this fall semester have been mild to moderate.

The Centers for Disease Control expect up to 90,000 deaths this upcoming flu season due to H1N1 -- that's up from the usually expected 30,000.

Peoria Centennial hs football hit hard with flu

Peoria, AZ

"The flu is going around and it's not treating us kindly," Taylor said.

Coach Richard Taylor didn't want to say which one of his senior stars is suffering but it's one of his guards -- either Nick Rowland or Dylan Lusk.

Four other starters have been ailing this week. There are also two non-starters out with mononucleosis.

A mono outbreak, huh? I suppose not impossible but I would love to know how it was diagnosed. When I had mono I received a clinical diagnosis. You know, fatigue, sore throat...

Could certainly be confused with flu.

I could not get the story to copy, but it stated thirteen of the University of Arizona's students have confirmed cases of H1N1.

The University of Arizona says it has 13 cases of H1N1 swine flu at its Tucson campus. “We have 13 confirmed H1N1 cases. All were mild to moderate in nature, no one has been hospitalized. everyone has recovered or is recovering,” said UA spokesman Johnny Cruz. The number is not as widespread as those reported at some schools such as the University of Kansas and Washington State University, but other colleges in Arizona say they can’t peg how many cases of H1N1 are on their campuses. Officials with Maricopa Community Colleges say they are not aware of any cases.

Arizona universities say they have cases of the H1N1 swine flu on campus, but don’t know how many. Officials at Arizona State University in Tempe, Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff and Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale say they haven’t been able to track the numbers.

Dr. Allen Markus, director of health services at ASU, said university health clinics are seeing students with flu symptoms but nothing is out of the ordinary compared to last year. Markus said the H1N1 continues to affect patients much the same as seasonal flu. “Both the state and Coconino County Health Department are discouraging testing of suspected H1N1 cases. It is unknown how many might be at Northern Arizona University,” said NAU spokesman Tom Bauer said. “However, NAU’s Fronske Health Center is seeing a few influenza-like illnesses per day. County health officials believe that more than 80 percent of influenza-like illness circulating right now is the H1N1 virus. So far the H1N1 virus is similar in severity of illness to the seasonal flu and most individuals get better without needing medical care,” Bauer said. Officials at Thunderbird said they are not sure if any students have the H1N1 strain of influenza.

Sierra Vista schools report hard hit by flu

The Sierra Vista district has 9 schools and roughly 5,500 students. Superintendent Brett Agenbroad said Wednesday about 600 of them called in sick. He says that's four times as many as usual.

Agenbroad says elementary schools report the least illness. High Schools and middle schools have the most students out.

The nurse at Apache Middle School sent Tabitha and Whitney Stutzman home wearing masks.

Almost 30 percent of Apache's students are out sick.
That's the highest percentage at any school in the district.

Despite having so many students and staff sick, Agenbroad says he is not considering closing Sierra Vista schools.

"At this point the flu is fairly mild. It takes six or seven days for kids to get over it typically, and they come back. So until there's some catastrophic event associated with it, we're planning on staying open," says Agenbroad.

Despite so many sick staff, Agenbroad says Sierra Vista schools have plenty of substitutes to operate normally.

Sierra Vista schools affected by flu but plan to stay open
Mon, 10/05/2009 - 01:11

SIERRA VISTA — Administrators don’t expect to close schools this week due to an outbreak of illnesses.

Public schools in Sierra Vista experienced unusually high absentee rates last week due to students staying home with flu-like symptoms suspected to be caused by the H1N1 flu virus.

Superintendent Brett Agenbroad said absentee rates declined over the course of the week and no schools were closed or are planned to be closed.

Buena High School was one of the campuses with a high absentee rate last week, but attendance on Friday was better than in the middle of the week, Agenbroad said. On Wednesday, Buena had an absentee rate of 21.5 percent, versus about 17 percent on Friday. The rate for an average day is between 2 percent and 4 percent.

The unusually high absentee rates are an indication that parents are doing what they’ve been asked to do, which is to keep their children home if they’re sick, Agenbroad said. The schools also have been sending home students with flu-like symptoms before they enter their classes.

Huachuca City school closes because of illness

Associated Press - October 6, 2009 10:24 AM ET

HUACHUCA CITY, Ariz. (AP) - Illness has brought school to a halt in Huachuca City.

For the next four days Huachuca City Elementary will be closed and crews will be disinfecting everything that children put their hands on.

On Monday, 36% of the student body was absent due to flu.

School officials said 171 students of the 475 who attend stayed home as well as ten staffers.

Superintendent Karl Uterhardt says there were 140 absences Friday.

Huachuca City Elementary will remain closed Tuesday through Saturday.

After that, fall break kicks in. So, while students are away, the entire school will be disinfected including door knobs, desks, restrooms, and the cafeteria.

Tombstone High School and Walter Meyer Elementary will remain open this week.
