Piauí decrees emergency after two deaths from suspected swine flu
Contributor Juliana Andrade, Tue, 23/03/2010 - 09:01

Reporter Agency Brazil

Brasilia - The governor of Piaui, Wellington Dias, declared an emergency after the death of two pregnant women with suspected influenza A (H1N1) - swine flu - in the last 18 to 20. This year, the state has recorded 27 suspected cases, two confirmed and one death caused by disease. Three women are hospitalized with suspected disease.

Yesterday (22), met the day in an attempt to devise strategies to combat the flu. The decree of emergency will remain in force for three months and ensures easier, for example, buying or renting equipment for the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), as respirators.

Another measure adopted, according to a statement published by the government of Piauí, was the release of 16 beds at the Hospital of the Military Police for patients transferred from the Institute for Tropical Diseases Natan Portela which is not with the disease. Thus, the institute, which serves as the reference state for the treatment of influenza, will be accessible to people infected Influenza H1N1.

...same info as in stephensons' post above, but while there have been 2 deaths confirmed as h1n1, more deaths are suspected to be h1n1 deaths. In the post on March 23rd, 12 other deaths were listed under suspected h1n1 (6 were pregnant women), all with date of deaths in March 2010.

A has recorded 22 deaths in the State of Pará
Sespa released a new report that shows the rapid advance of disease

Within just one week, five new deaths from influenza A (H1N1) were confirmed in Pará, showing the increase in the number of cases of disease in the state. Data report released yesterday by the State Department of Health (Sespa) reported 22 confirmed deaths during the first three months of this year. Of this total, seven victims were women. In addition, there are still two deaths awaiting laboratory results.

The data recorded in 2010, between January 3 and March 20, account for 351 reported cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) with hospitalization. Of the total, 151 were confirmed for influenza A and 58 are awaiting results. Bethlehem, Cameta Parauapebas and emerge as the areas with the largest number of deaths, three in each municipality.

NUMBERS

By 11 March, had been 13 confirmed deaths due to influenza A in the state. In a bulletin issued at the time, the data indicated 195 cases of SARS reported, with 89 confirmations for H1N1.

A week later, four more deaths were confirmed by the flu, bringing the toll to 17. On March 17, the newsletter published by Sespa showed increase in reports of SARS cases to 283, with 129 confirmed.

In addition to the alarming numbers, the population of Pará has another concern: the confusion caused by the similarity of symptoms between influenza A (H1N1) and dengue.

For the head of the Epidemiological Monitoring of Municipal Health (Sesma), Leila Flores, the population must be alert to the symptoms of the disease. "The influenza A and dengue fever have similar symptoms, but attention should be focused on respiratory symptoms, which is what differentiates them.

Brazil reports 36 A/H1N1 flu deaths so far this year

English.news.cn 2010-03-26

RIO DE JANEIRO, March 25 (Xinhua) -- A total of 36 Brazilians have died from A/H1N1 flu so far this year, the Brazilian Health Ministry reported Thursday.

Last year, the country registered a total of 2,051 deaths from the flu.

Brazil started in early March a nationwide vaccination campaign against A/H1N1 flu, which killed thousands of people all over the world in 2009.

According to the Health Ministry, over 3.8 million citizens have already been vaccinated against the disease.

The first phase of the campaign, in which health care professionals and indigenous citizens were vaccinated, has already ended. Now, the country is vaccinating pregnant women, children aged six months to two years, and citizens with chronic diseases such as heart conditions, diabetes and asthma.

In April, the third phase of the vaccination campaign will be launched, and adults aged 20 to 29 will be vaccinated. Adults aged 30 to 39 years old will be immunized in the next phase.

Those aged 60 or older will receive the regular annual vaccine against flu in April and May. Those with chronic health conditions will be immunized against A/H1N1 flu as well.

The Health Ministry expects to immunize a total of 72 million people during the campaign.

This impedes the spread of vaccine, "said Secretary of State for Health, Gilbert Martin, who leaves office today to apply for the position of state representative.
