Since its arrival here, swine flu has killed 112 people. Thirty-eight people died in the Santiago area, 14 in the Valparaíso Region and 12 in the Lakes Region. Only the far northern Arica-Paranicota Region (Region XV), which borders both Peru and Bolivia, has been fatality free.

Chile has detected the H1N1 flu virus in turkeys at two farms, health authorities said on Thursday.

It is the first time the virus, which is known as "swine flu" and has likely infected millions of people globally, has been found in animals other than pigs.

Should we be concerned about swine flu jumping into turkeys? I thought Dr. Niman had said something awhile back about the virus jumping between animals and humans being a concern for a potentially more virulent mutation.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I don't know. If in the travel logs for the flu sequences, the viruses are found in migratory birds, swine and humans, then is this any different?

On the other hand, it doesn't sound good at all!

Patient Critically Ill with Human Influenza

The person, whose identity was not released, is in the ICU of Clínica Las Condes. So far in November, 7 other cases of A/H1N1 virus have been confirmed.

The patient was hospitalized after returning from a trip to Mexico. Even in that country, the person started to feel the first symptoms of the disease and on arriving in Chile was admitted with a diagnosis of pneumonia. However, tests later confirmed the presence of the Human Influenza virus.

The pulmonologist at Clinica Las Condes, Maria Teresa Parada, explained that "the patient came in on the sixth day from the onset of fever. Antiviral therapy was initiated immediately and, although he is still critical, we find that, supported by all required therapeutic measures, he is stable."

It was announced that this is not an isolated case, since there are other 7 cases of A/H1N1.

Chile denies new wave of A/H1N1 flu outbreak
2009-11-21

SANTIAGO, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chile on Friday rejected a saying that the country was witnessing another massive outbreak of the A/H1N1 influenza.

Rumors spread about a renewed onslaught of the A/H1N1 on the country after a patient who had visit Mexico was hospitalized in grave flu conditions.

"That is among the normal, and there are many cases of people who have traveled and most possibly have been infected outside the country," said Cecilia Morales, Chile's vice health minister.

Morales said "we have a low circulation of the virus." "There has been a larger circulation of the A/H1N1 virus, but it does not happen here," the minister affirmed.

The 50-year-old patient was hospitalized on Thursday after a trip to Mexico. The authorities said the patient was receiving anti-viral treatment and was in stable condition.

Chile registered 10 cases of A/H1N1 flu cases last month.
